Authorized DPS Road Tests in Houston & Cypress!

On September 1, 2014, the State of Texas permitted independent companies to participate in the Third-Party Skills Testing (TPST) program. We are qualified to give the Department's driving skills test since we are a Commercial Driver Education school with the proper licensing.

Choose Your Preferred Vehicle to Use

  • Community Driving School vehicles: Clients taking road tests at Community Driving School are welcome to reserve a vehicle in advance at NO EXTRA COST. In order to ensure that a road test vehicle is available on the day of your scheduled road test, please contact us as far in advance as possible.
  • Personal Vehicles: If you plan on taking the road test in your own car, it must have a valid inspection/registration sticker, front and back license plates, and proof of vehicle liability insurance.

Who is Authorized to Take the DPS Road Test & What is Required?

There are three groups we offer DPS Road tests to. Please read the descriptions below before booking to ensure you meet the qualifications and have the proper paperwork to help expedite your journey to becoming a licensed driver.

16-17 Years Old

You won't be able to take or pass the test without these things on test day:

  • You have to be 16 years older
  • Have a current DE-964 that says "Drivers license only" and shows that you have successfully completed a Minors Driver Education Course.
  • Have a valid learner's permit for at least six months
  • Parental or guardian supervision is required.
  • Certificate of completion for the DPS Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) video with a date no more than 90 days after passing the skills test. Learn more about the ITTD program.

18-24 Years Old

  • Have an approved DE-964 or ADE-1317 that shows you completed a Driver Education Course
  • Have a legitimate driver's license with restrictions
  • Certificate of completion for the DPS Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) video with a date no more than 90 days after passing the skills test. More details about ITTD can be found on this page.
  • Anyone beyond the age of 18 taking the DE-964 must adhere to the same guidelines as those taking the test for the first time.

25 years of age or older

  • A legal Learner's License to Drive in Texas
  • Certificate of completion for the DPS Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITYD) video with a date no more than 90 days after passing the skills test. Note that the DPS Impact Texas Young Drivers program can be used in place of the DPS Impact Texas Adult Drivers program while that one is being developed.   • If you are over the age of 25 and applying for your first Texas driver's license, you are exempt from taking driver's education.
